Well this arrived lightning fast from the UK. I had a really long day at work today and when I got home I had a parcel slip waiting for me. I had planned on going to get parcels tomorrow but just couldn’t wait. I bought this pre-loved from Karen D in the Mulberry Facebook group.

Oh my I love love love it! It is perfect – as good as new. Doesn’t even look as though it has been used. I am absolutely thrilled! It is perfect for both makeup and stationery. I have already moved all my pencils into it. It fits scissors, glue stick, three rulers, pencils, pens, erasers, tape and leads.

Karen thank you so much – I am so delighted!

UPDATE: this beauty flew instead to a friend who really wanted it and had had a few bad days. But I have left the photos here as it is so cute. I am glad it went to a good home and made someone smile!

Handbag Organisers

Someone asked me the other day which handbag organizer I like the best.

My favorite is the VIP, though I do have several Inpaq organizers in different sizes.

You put them inside your handbag and as you change handbags you just lift the liner (as they are sometimes called) out and put them into your new bag. They can also be used to keep your Filofax and stationery together.

And of course if you do an eBay search for handbag organizer you will get lots of hits, as can be seen when I did a search for a purple one here. As you can see, you can find them for as little as £1 with free postage. Quality varies and many of them do not have padded bottoms but if you are not sure if you would get on with a handbag liner/organiser, it is nice to start with a cheapie to use on a trial run.

  • papers for work (A4)
  • and all the usual accoutrements – umbrella, pens, keys, mirror, makeup, iPhone, gum, energy bars, water, scarf and spare shoes

First time I have ever tried this! Friday was the last day of a two-week long course in the Parliament. After the course was over I had to carry all the files, books, papers and stationery back to my school. So the bag would be empty on the way there but full on the way back. So I put one inside the other for the trip there. Worked like a charm.

My Michael Kors Jet Set Laptop Tote went on the inside and my Cath Kidston tote went on the outside.

A surprising surprising success – Michael Kors Jet Set Laptop Tote. I love this bag!

I tend to not go for things that are hugely popular. I tend to see something once and love it, twice and become very curious, three times and want to buy it, four times and lose interest. I get bored very quickly and I don’t like to look like everyone else. In Sweden if there is a trend, EVERYONE wears it. EVERYONE!

So when Michael Kors totes started to become popular I liked them but decided not to buy one because everyone was carrying them.

At the end of the season though, one of our local department stores had a 50% off sale and were selling these totes at 50% discount. I thought of it but then decided not to. Then one day I happened to walk past when the discount went even higher but all the MK totes were gone. THEN I found one displayed with the new season colours. This one is a Raspberry (new season) but was labelled a Fuchsia (old season) and was a brilliant price.

I started using it because it matched my favorite shoes and belt perfectly. But then I continued using it because I liked how well designed and easy to use it is. Then I fell in love with it. Now I am unable to move out of it!

I like it because:

  • it is nice and light
  • it has a flat bottom so stands up nicely
  • things don’t fall in a heap at the bottom
  • there is a nice padded central compartment for a laptop or files. My laptop is 15″ and fits perfectly
  • there is an iPad pouch (also padded) which can hold an A5 notebook
  • there are five pockets, one with a zipper
  • it holds A4 files and papers straight and smooth without bending them
  • there is a keychain
  • the straps do not dig into my shoulders
  • they are the perfect length for being hand, arm or shoulder-held
  • it does not show a mark
  • it softens with use
  • the workmanship is excellent

This one is a Michael Kors Jet Set Laptop Tote and it has a middle compartment. You also get a Jet Set Tote which has a single central compartment. If I get another one I will probably get that kind. And maybe in black or brown. But I am so happy with this pink one. I was not expecting to fall in love and I did – head over heels!

Goyard

$

Most people, even if they are not interested, can identify a Louis Vuitton item if it is the classic monogramme. They are ubiquitous and faked to death. For this reason, many people don’t like carrying Louis Vuitton anymore. I am one of them. I have a large bucket bag but have not used it for about ten years because at one point they were EVERYWHERE, mostly counterfeit. I would like a Speedy and a Neverfull but am waiting for the tide to turn again before I add them to my collection. They are a little too ubiquitous at the moment  – especially in Sweden.

A brand that has, surprisingly, remained under the radar is Goyard. It is like a fashion insider’s secret passport and I do hope it remains that way.

In many ways Goyard is very  similar to Louis Vuitton – they are more or less the same price (perhaps a little more), they too are made of coated canvas and also have a very recognizable pattern (a chevron), their bestselling St Louis is very similar to the Louis Vuitton Neverfull, and they are also a very old French luggage maker. BUT they don’t use advertising and have a very small retail and media presence. Yet they sell to young and old, even though they don’t scream ‘I am EXPENSIVE’ and the mass market does not even know what they are. They are faked quite a bit but not to the extent of Louis Vuitton because the brand is not so well-known.

What I do with handbags I no longer want

$

Regular readers may notice that I have….erm….quite a few bags. I have a constant turnover but the favourites I always keep.

The ways I get rid of handbags I don’t want are:

  • My daughter learned a deep love of handbags from me so she gets all my old Francesco Biasia, Juicy, Furla and Lush bags plus any other cheaper ones she wants. She has one Louis Vuitton from me and often borrows bags from me.
  • I have a second hand shop where I sell on consignment. They sell all my vintage ones from the 50s and 60s almost before they are on the shelves and then each season they tell me what colour will be selling and I take suitable bags in. They take quite high commission but the shop does extremely well so things go fast and they take care of all the admin for me. The shop is the best secondhand shop in Stockholm and is called Judits.
  • I have sold to colleagues, students, neighbours and twice to people in the street who absolutely had to have whatever bag I was using. One was a leather miniskirt I had turned into a tote and so it was one of a kind. The other one was this one – I had bought at an Indian market and didn’t particularly like it

Screen Shot 2013-01-13 at 3.01.47 PM

Screen Shot 2013-01-13 at 3.02.01 PM

I sell on Blocket.se – a Swedish bulletin board where you can sell things at a price you set. Once someone has bought something from me they tend to keep in touch so then I can offer them others I don’t want.

I sometimes have bag parties where all my ‘faithful followers’ can come and look at the bags I would like to be rid of and either buy or swap.

I use consignment sites to swap and sell as well as Facebook groups and eBay.

For many years (2000 – 2008) I used to be the senior moderator for fashion and beauty on the Handbag.com (how apt!) discussion forums and there were were allowed to sell and then when selling was banned we could swap so I did it that way too.

Do I ever regret selling a bag?

Yes it does happen – about ten percent of the time. There is one beautiful Francesco Biasia that I gave to someone and regretted it immediately. She uses it all the time so every time I see it, I have a small pang of regret but she loves it and I can still see it so I try not to brood. I also sold a gorgeous Mulberry Jacquetta that enabled me to buy my large TSM Balloon and that one I have deeply regretted.

Wallets

One of my readers wrote to me a few weeks back and asked about my wallets and if I ever wrote about them. I only ever have one wallet at a time, and my wallets are usually very boring. Which is strange considering how I am with Filofaxes and handbags!

With a wallet I find one that I like and stick to it until it falls apart. I have to find one I really like (which is quite difficult and I hate the process) and then I don’t change. I like knowing where everything is and I need quite a big wallet with lots of card slots and place for bits of paper.

The one I am using now is a Rizzo one in black leather. I am so sorry I didn’t buy a second one (as I usually do) because this one was perfect but won’t last much longer. It must be about 9 years old now.

Before this one I had one I bought it Tallin, Estonia when their leather goods were still so cheap. I used it until it literally fell to pieces. Prior to that I had a Mulberry one in Olive Darwin like the photo below (photo is from eBay)

As if taking care of all us wasn’t enough, Petra also designs and sells bags – see her site here. These bags are lovely and very hardwearing. There are several sizes with matching wallets and they are lined in red animal print. Both Petra and her mom use both the wallets and the bags. The smaller size does not take A4 easily but the others do.

Bag Hooks

Bag hooks, or bag hangers as they are sometimes called, are pretty easy to find. Generally any gift shop or place selling accessories has a selection. They come in many different styles – from plain discs to sparkly shapes. They make a very nice gift and are usually not expensive – usually from £5 to £10 though you do get some more pricey ones made by famous brands such as Aspinal.

I have been given several over the years but have never used them. In Sweden most restaurants have hooks under the tables or on the table legs to hold bags. If they do not have them I generally keep my bag on an empty chair beside me or my lap. I very seldom put my bag on the floor or the back of a chair because, coming from a country with a high crime rate as I do, this is where thieves pounce.

When I was in Rotterdam and Petra and I went out for lunch, Petra hung her bag on a gorgeous sparkly bag hook. Later on, her mom pulled out the most gorgeous sequined sparkly ladybug bag hook! I fell in love.

So one of my resolutions this year is going to be to try to get into the habit of using these. They are pretty simple to use – just release the metal catch, swivel out the bag hook, position the counterweight on the table and hang your bag on it. Many bag hooks come with little pouches to keep your hook in, but even if they don’t they are pretty hardy and fairly small and light. They keep your bag close and visible, easily accessible and away from dirty or sticky surfaces.

This is a very busy week for me, with some days starting at 7am and ending at 9pm. It is also very icy and snowy outside so, where I usually lighten the load on a heavy day by putting things into two bags, I cannot do that at the moment as I have to have one hand free to hold onto the railing down my steps or to break my fall if I slip. I have 126 steps to the bus stop and 68 of them are sheer ice. Hence the Romilly which is big but weighty.

  • Mulberry Romilly in Oak Darwin
  • Van Der Spek undyed binder holding keys, cards, planner, travel card, usb stick, money, pen, supermarket trolley tokens, maps etc
  • Van Der Spek undyed two-pen holder with Gillio ballpoint pens (one white, one pink)
  • Black leather gloves with Thinsulate lining
  • Lunchbox with snacks (in this case nuts and dried fruit)
  • Energy Bar
  • Apple
  • iPod Touch
  • iPhone
  • iPad
  • Smythson coral croc manuscript book in King’s size
  • Papers in Ordning och Reda transparent plastic pouch
  • Two text books – Management and Marketing English and Financial English
  • Notepad
  • Two packs of tissues – I have a cold
  • Day Nurse because I have a cold
  • Umbrella
  • Van Der Spek Touch Me zipped pouch in brown buffalo leather, holding makeup
  • Parliament ID
  • Keys
  • Glasses
  • Skull mirror
  • Stimorol gum

Liebeskind Berlin Beau Bag in Fuchsia

Last week I was on the train when, at the central station, a woman jumped on with her suitcase and this handbag. I fell in love. The bag touched me as she sat down opposite me and it was soft and looked pretty much like the real thing though I guessed it was not when I saw the Liebeskind stamp on the front. She opened up the bag and inside were her glasses, passports and papers all neatly in the side compartments. I like Liebeskind notebooks and have written about them here. As soon as I had a moment I looked up the bag – thank goodness for Google – and found that it is called a Beau and is available in three colourways – green, cream and fuchsia. The fuchsia I saw was so beautiful that that was the one I decided I wanted. I usually only go for neutrals but in this case I made an exception.

I found several in the USA and on eBay in various countries but when I see something like this, I usually go to the country of origin as the prices are better. I found one in Germany on Amazon for €181 and €4.50 DHL shipping (which took 24 hours from Germany to Stockholm).

This is only the second time I have hunted down a bag after seeing someone else carrying one. What I really liked about this one is the zip on either side which holds A4 and also traveling things like sunglasses, documents etc. My Chloe Elvires, Francesco Biasia Barberas and the Modalu Pippa all have the central zipper with separate compartments for paper/iPad/small laptop on either side and they work so well if you have to carry lots of papers for work or travel a lot.

Three other things I really liked were the gold hardware, bright pink lining and the black braided handles (they last really well and do not change colour due to wear like other colours tend to)

These photographs are stock photographs from Liebeskind and also from Wardow.com which has a wonderful selection of bags and has very good service. I have included photographs of the green version which is also very nice.

The bag is due to be delivered on Monday and will give a review as soon as I have it.

Michael Kors Camouflage Tote

$

This is probably my most hideous bag, which is why I have not featured it before, but oh how useful it has been.

Many designers have certain items specially made for sales and outlet shops. They look the same apart from tiny details and price. I am sure this is one of them. I bought it last June for 80% off the retail price. It looks just like my JetSet Laptop Tote but does not have the central laptop/iPad section.

I always treat my bags well but I don’t baby them. This one has been used when I don’t want to use any of my nicer ones – when it is muddy, at the beach, when my load is strap-breakingly heavy, when the contents make it bulge at the seams. It has carried shopping, parcels, books, sharp and wet items. And it has just come up smiling. I tend to carry this one for my overload when one bag is enough. And over the months I have really become rather fond of it. Because of the pattern, I doubt it will ever show scuffs or marks.

When I bought my two Longchamp Les Pliages bags in nylon, I was hoping to use them for the same purpose – as overflow bags –  with the added benefit of being able to fold them up and keep them in my handbag when not in use. Unfortunately the long straps made the folded version too big and the design meant that things all landed in a pile in the middle of the bag. This one is stable so keeps things like bottles upright. It is not foldable though.

Liebeskind Beau bag in Fuchsia

I wrote about how I discovered and ordered this bag the other day. It arrived today – shipping (which cost €4.50) took 24 hours door to door.

It is lovely!

  • Big but does not look big
  • Spacious but not heavy
  • One central zipped compartment
  • Two side zipped compartments
  • 5 internal pockets, one zipped
  • Heavy duty gold hardware
  • 4 gold feed
  • Fits A4 in each of the side pockets which each have doubled zippers
  • It would work as an overnight bag but shrinks when not stuffed
  • Gorgeous pink cotton lining
  • Lovely colours but not too bright
  • Stands up nicely without being too structured
IMG_6134

Well wrapped

IMG_6136

All the hardware was covered with plastic and protected. Inside was acid free paper stuffing and desiccant sachets. Even in shops I prefer to have backs that have not been on a shelf, with all the plastic and paper stuffing still in.

IMG_6137

IMG_6139

Gorgeous cotton lining. These compartments have a double zipper each so you can choose to open one side or the whole thing. The bag stands up quite well so would work as a mobile office with paper and stationery in the side pockets.

What is luxury?

$
0
0

There was a discussion recently in a Facebook group about what makes a bag ‘luxury’. Some people said price, others said materials, yet others said workmanship or brand heritage. Names mentioned were Gucci, Hermés, Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga.

Personally I think it is all of these plus other things. However, when writing this article I got myself in knots because it is not as simple as it may seem.

I have a bag that I designed myself and had made from the finest full-quill ostrich skin and lined in lambskin. All the leather was ethically sourced. Every seam was double stitched at my request and all the hardware is both top quality and heavy duty. This bag has been intensively used for eight years and looks brand new.  For other people this does not count as luxury though, because the artisan (a friend) and the designer (myself) were not well known or trained in the top ateliers and the brand is not well known. The leather is luxurious but from a wholesaler in South Africa who farms ostriches for famous brands. Because I got it at source it would not be considered luxury. In fact there is no brand, just that one handbag. It is luxury to me but not to others. Though I am always getting complimented on the bag and it does look very luxe.

photo-2-11
On the other hand, the designer and brand do not necessarily always mean anything either, as many times after a brand hits the big time the bags are mass produced and the quality drops. The designer stops designing each product and hands over the reins to a team of designers. Many designers – Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang for example – have their own design houses as well as working as chief designers for other brands. Each of these brands usually has a more expensive main line as well as a cheaper diffusion line. They cannot possibly do everything themselves.

Gucci and Pierre Cardin overfranchised themselves in the 1970s and 1980s. Their name was slapped on everything from cheap scarves and sunglasses to horrible perfume. Cardin has never recovered and Gucci only came back into the fold after Tom Ford took over and made it trendy again.

Prada is a company that does not dress stars for free – not even for the Oscars. If a star is wearing Prada, you know they have paid for it. Prada and their diffusion line, Miu Miu, have stubbornly refused all offers of high street collaborations with companies like H and M.

Price is no indicator of luxury status either. If you are extremely wealthy even Hermés would be budget to you so you look for something more. And if you were on a tight budget, Zara would be considered luxury. Some handbags from budget chains are actually extremely well made – one example is the Jimmy Choo collaboration with H and M. Despite the relatively low price (though high for H and M) the leather on those bags was magnificent, the bags were extremely well made and also limited edition. I think they are luxury but then again, many people wouldn’t.

Mulberry and Louis Vuitton have tried to outwit the fakers and the plebs by making their bags more and more expensive, hoping to appeal to a select few rather than the mass market, which they felt was diluting their luxury brands and making them mainstream. It had the opposite effect however, leading to profit warnings for Mulberry and even more counterfeiting. For some people their pain threshold regarding pricing just moves upwards, for others it means they become disillusioned with the brand offering the same bags at skyrocketing prices.

One thing that many people do not consider factors regarding luxury is the shopping experience, but I think good customer service (both in store and online), a well functioning website and generous guarantee and after sales service is extremely important. There is no point in buying eyewateringly expensive and beautiful leather products if the company acts like they operate out of the back of someone’s truck. And ignores any issues you may have after you have paid for your item.  Not sure if anyone remembers the shop Voyage in London, where they made their name out of being rude to people and refusing to open the door to let you in the shop. They felt it made them luxury, I definitely didn’t.

And pedigree is also important – a heritage brand with a long history is more likely to be considered luxury than a new upstart, though that may be a little shortsighted. Louis Vuitton, despite its impressive pedigree, has battled to hold its own after being faked so much. The brand value was diluted because so many copies (both good and bad) flooded the market. The same went for Burberry. And even Abercrombie and Fitch had to pay Jersey Shore ‘celebrities’ NOT to wear their clothes because the brand value was dropping by being associated with the reality show.

Being locally produced is also very rare now, with most companies producing in cheaper countries than that where they are based. As long as the finishing touches are made in a country, it can be stated that it was made there. So many items which say Made in Italy for example, just have the labels, the laces or the buttons put on there. The rest of the item was probably made in China and India. Modalu, for example, pays it’s workers 17p an hour to produce handbags which cost well over £200, and then they market them as luxury on their website.

Being discreet is also important to me anyway – no garish logos, no celebrity endorsement, something that is like a social passport for those in the know while others remain unaware, without bashing people over the head with giant labels which scream ‘look how much money I cost!’. This is why I like Balenciaga.

Labels I like – Lambertson Truex, Tanner Krolle, Reed Krackoff, Beatice Amblard, Launer, Bottega Veneta.

Beatrice Amblard is an example of a brand that ticks all the boxes – she is one of the best leather artisans that Hermés ever had. She used to make the Kelly bag and was an Hermés brand ambassador. She now has her own brand and her own store. Not many people know who she is or what her bags look like but when you see one you know that it is luxurious. You are not sure why but you know that it is.

When it comes to other things, there are questions I would like to ask my readers

– would you think a beautiful flawless diamond with top scores in the 4 Cs is luxury if it did not come from a famous jeweller?
– would you think a hugely expensive black diamond in a black gold setting which was made by a master goldsmith is luxury, even if it looked like it came from a gumball machine and no one else had any idea of its value?
– do you think Gillio organisers are luxury because of the price and the leather, despite ring problems, customer service problems and not the best website?
– do you think Van Der Spek organisers are luxury because of the customisation options and customer service?

boston_bergdorf_beatrice_amblard

So, dear readers, what do you think is luxury?

I am still using this every day and am loving it.

What I like about it:

  • the colours – it is going to be really nice for spring and summer
  • all the compartments. I have my iPod, my iPhone and my iPad in one of the side compartments and all my working papers and books in the others, so it functions as a portable office
  • the pretty lining
  • the fact that it is structured enough to stand up but floppy enough to collapse and become smaller when not full
  • the gold hardware and metal zips.
  • the plaited straps. They are comfortable and can fit in hand and over shoulder or arm.

What I like less about it:

  • not much at all really except that the middle compartment is not always that easy to get into when the sides are full.

As you can see from the top photo, I have added an Ordning & Reda tassel to the one strap by means of a cable tie. I really like it.

What I use to condition my leather

That’s right. I don’t put anything on my leather to oil, moisturize, treat or clean it. Not handbags, shoes, jackets, binders or boots. In fact, when I buy something pre-loved I usually specify if I am not sure that I do not want one that has been treated with anything.

I have found that handling the items means that the oils from my hands transfer onto the item and it never needs moisturizing. My book artist has said that leather can generally look after itself and doesn’t need much care. In fact his exact words when I asked how I should look after my hand bound book collection were:

You shouldn’t have to do much to it. Tropical climates are dangerous (high heat, high humidity) but short of that it shouldn’t need anything special. Every once in a while I would rub it down with a mild leather cleaner, but you should be careful with that. It needs to be a good one, NOT a leather cleaner for shoes and things.

Grandala Bags

I wrote about Blondie Mania in this article. I loved their bags. They have now been rebranded Grandala and have a lovely shop in London. Their leather is amazing and their coloured bags are the most beautiful shades – particularly the purples and greens. I have met Gerard, whose partner Helen designs the bags and he let me wander around his shop ogling the gorgeous bags displayed like jewels. They have epic sales as well.
